Korean cattle in general are known as "Hanwoo" (Han-u and Hanu), historically raised mainly in the Korean Peninsula, the name applies to the most common type which has brown coat colour.

Depending on the degree of marbling, meat color, fat color, firmness of rib eye and maturity, Hanwoo beef is classified by 5 grades: 3, 2, 1, 1+, 1++. 1++ Hanwoo is at the top of the pecking order.
